Andrea Mancini “Watercolor Stars” edizioni La Città Delle Nuvole (Firenze, 2024) 70 pagine a colori. Molti pensano che il Watercolor sia una tecnica semplice, veloce, estremamente leggera e poco considerata rispetto alle più “blasonate” come l’olio o la tecnica mista. Si sbagliano. L’acquerello è la tecnica più difficile proprio perchè così “Sottovalutata”. E poi per una altra buona ragione: perchè è l’arte della leggerezza. Leggerezza di segno, di luce, di ombre, leggerezza di impressione… Eva Charteris, degli amati acquerelli del grande artista americano John Singer Sargent, amava dire “To live with Sargent’s watercolours is to live with sunshine captured and held.” Forse la verità è proprio nel fatto che con l’acquerello si ottengono i migliori risultati lasciando “che sia…” cioè abbandonandosi in buona parte alla sua propria insindacabile libertà di diffondersi, allargarsi, dilagare, e poi ancora fermarsi, seguendo le volute dell’acqua ed un proprio misterioso destino che non ci è sarà mai possibile prevedere ed ancor meno controllare. E qui sta la più grande e potente forza dell’acquerello, la sua imprevedibilità. In una epoca in cui tutto deve essere sotto controllo, in cui l’uomo impone l’esercizio del proprio controllo su ogni cosa, lui, l’acquerello, resta meno compreso forse proprio per questa liquida  indole autonoma, imprevedibile, ribelle.

Many people think watercolour is a simple, quick, extremely light technique; for this reason, it is often not considered as much as oil or mixed paintings are. Yet the are wrong. As it is the most underestimated technique, it is consequentially the most complicated
one, and there is also another reason for this: it is the medium of lightness. Lightness in the sense of light, sign, shadows, impressions… “To live with Sargent’s watercolors” Eva Charteris once said “is to live with sunshine captured and held.” Perhaps, the truth behind watercolor really lies in the “let it be…” factor; the uncontrollable freedom to let it spread, flow, run, to then stop, follow the water and eventually face a proper destiny that we will never be able to control. This is the very strength of watercolour: its unpredictability.
In the era we live in, where everything should be under control and man dominates anything, watercolor yet remains an unappreciated medium; perhaps for its very autonomous, unpredictable, and rebellious nature.
